Evelyn was born January 14, 1938, in Scottsbluff to Harold and Viola (Potter) Gifford. She graduated from Banner County High School in 1955 before pursuing a teaching degree. Evelyn began her studies through Nebraska State Teachers’ College in Kearney, and later completed her Masters degree.
She traveled the world in her younger years while also beginning her teaching career. Evelyn’s first teaching job was in Omaha. She also taught a short time in North Platte before returning to the Panhandle. She was a grade school teacher at Northfield Elementary in Gering and later taught special education at Geil Elementary, also in Gering.
Evelyn met the love of her life, Walter “Vern” Fegler, while square-dancing. They wed on Vern’s birthday, June 13, 1987, at Zion Evangelical Church.
Evelyn served as a local regent of DAR and was also involved in Iris Club. She and Vern were both very active in their church family and together they attended multiple Four Cs church conventions. Evelyn was always very supportive of her husband’s interests. She embraced his German Russian heritage and continued to participate in the Germans from Russia group even after Vern’s untimely passing. Evelyn also partnered with Vern making wood crafts, intricately painting his creations. She was an avid reader and a member of various study groups.
Evelyn made countless memories with her beloved family throughout the years. She took her Gifford nephews on ski trips several years while they were growing up and maintained close relationships with her Fegler nieces and nephews as well. She looked forward to family get-togethers and it was a bonus if someone had made her favorite treat, homemade ice cream. She was genuinely interested in others and cared deeply for her family. Those who were blessed to know her will always remember her in the highest regard for the sweet, loving, person she was.
