Shirley was born March 3, 1938, to Eddie and Mary (McMurtry) Adams, the first living child of seven. She attended and graduated from Scottsbluff High School in May 1957.
Shirley met handsome Melvin Bernhardt, and they married on November 29, 1957. Ten months to the day, their first daughter, Toni, was welcomed into their lives. In April 1961, a second daughter, Gale, arrived, followed by baby boy, Mike, in December 1963.
Though it was often difficult, Shirley managed to get around. Spending time with her grandchildren was a joy in her life. Getting her nails done and playing Bingo brought her happiness, especially when she won. She enjoyed visits with friends, and lunches with classmates and coworkers also enhanced her life.
Shirley was a hard worker and kept busy sewing and baking cakes for many people who enjoyed them. Her several years of employment were primarily spent at ABC Nursery, Western Sugar, and Sprint from which she retired.
Shirley was very active in the Eagles Auxiliary. She served as Madam President and held office in most of the other available positions. She was named Eagles Sweetheart at one time and attended many state conferences over the years.
Survivors include her children, Toni, Gale, and Mike; grandchildren, Joshua Lee (Hiep) and Harlee Jo, and Thomas James (Sara); great-grandchildren, Victor, Gage, Brad Jay, and Kailyn; sisters, Cherie and Barbara; and brother, Danny.
